How much does a new motherboard for laptop cost?

I have a HP laptop that is 13 months old. Screen went black but everything still lit up. No matter what I tried it would not work. I took it in and was told it needed a new motherboard. I asked how much it would cost and was told it would be cheaper to purchase a new laptop. Please advise on how much this typically costs, because the laptop cost me 00.00. Thank you!

Check out ebay on a $1000 dollar laptop around $200 maybe cheaper

    200-600 roughly for decent ones

search ebay for a motherboard for your specific laptop model. HP is pretty good about releasing full service manuals for their laptops so look that up and it will tell you how to dismantle the system and replace the motherboard. Its not real hard as long as you have a small screw driver and are able to follow manual instructions well. Just kind of tedious and can take some time to do.

One thing, if everything is lighting up like it is supposed to, try hooking up the laptop to a monitor using its video output port and also try shining a flashlight on the screen to see if you can actually see anything on the screen. If either of these work then it is less likely that that motherboard is bad (particularly if you can see stuff on the screen with a flashlight, in this case there is an issue with the backlight for sure).
